Illinois International Port District (Port of Chicago)

North America’s Greatest Multimodal Facility

As the only tri-modal facility in North America connecting the Great Lakes to the Mississippi River system, the Illinois International Port District (IIPD) serves as a prime inland gateway for global commerce. The Port District owns three sites on Chicago’s Southeast Side totaling 1,690 acres: Iroquois Landing, Lake Calumet Harbor, and Harborside International Golf Center.

Operating year-round, the Port of Chicago is key to the region’s industrial and economic development, moving bulk commodities including steel, lumber, petroleum, sugar, and oil, while advancing conservation and public access.

A National Multimodal Freight and Logistics Hub

The IIPD is located on Chicago’s Southeast Side along Lake Michigan and the Calumet River, including Iroquois Landing and Lake Calumet Harbor. It links Great Lakes shipping via the St. Lawrence Seaway with inland barge traffic on the Mississippi River system.

The IIPD (Port of Chicago) Impact

With access to the Great Lakes and inland waterways, connections to six Class I railroads, and proximity to several major interstate highways, the Port of Chicago is a vital multimodal freight hub supporting economic activity across the Chicago region and beyond.
