Preparing the next generation of maritime professionals.
Great Lakes Maritime Academy (GLMA) at Northwestern Michigan College is Michigan’s state maritime academy. The college offers Bachelor of Science degrees in Maritime Technology — including Deck Officer and Engineering Officer tracks — to prepare cadets to become licensed merchant marine officers, primed to sail both the Great Lakes and oceans.
Curriculum and training combines instruction with hands-on experience aboard the academy’s training ship, T/S State of Michigan, and commercial sea time on Great Lakes and ocean vessels. Graduates are eligible to take U.S. Coast Guard licensing exams (including Great Lakes Pilotage), earn credentials to serve as deck or engineering officers, and often find strong job placement and competitive salaries, making GLMA a direct path to a successful maritime career.
