Serving the St. Lawrence Seaway and Lake Ontario
Founded in 1962, the St. Lawrence Seaway Pilots Association (SLSPA) provides pilotage for vessels navigating District 1 of the Great Lakes pilotage system, covering the St. Lawrence Seaway and Lake Ontario. SLSPA pilots bring specialized knowledge of these waterways to vessels moving through the Seaway, helping support the safe and efficient flow of maritime commerce between the Great Lakes and global markets.
Safe navigation is at the center of SLSPA’s mission. Its pilots bring an intimate knowledge of local conditions, a deep understanding of pilotage operations and procedures, and proficiency in ship handling and navigation to each assignment. Working with a wide range of vessels and international crews, SLSPA pilots help vessels safely navigate one of North America’s most important maritime trade corridors.
SLSPA is dedicated to serving the public interest, maritime industry and stakeholders while protecting the Great Lakes environment. As part of the U.S. Great Lakes pilotage system, the Association is regulated by the U.S. Coast Guard Great Lakes Pilotage Division.
