The Upper Peninsula’s Historic Port

Rather than operating a traditional port, the City of Sault Ste. Marie oversees municipal waterfront and harbor-related functions. The City maintains public waterfront infrastructure, including its historic deep-water Carbide Dock — a monument of the city’s culture.

Constructed in the late 19^th century when it served as a critical shipping terminal and industrial powerhouse, the site has been newly rehabilitated to serve its community as a tourism and recreation hub. The 1,100 foot dock can now accommodate lake freighters and luxury cruise ships, is a premium spot for freighter watching and enables public access to the city’s waterfront, building more connections to the city’s historic downtown.

Nestled at the northern edge of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, Sault Ste. Marie and its Carbide Dock sit along the St. Marys River just south of its sister city in Ontario.
